How to recognise digestion problems in the barn
If you walk around in the barn, you can tell when there are digestive problems. Diarrhea, limping pigs, lifeless pigs that don’t want to get up, but also ear and tail biting are signs that things are not going well in the house. Problems can be caused by diseases such as Salmonella, PRRS and PIA. You can reduce this disease pressure by keeping the digestion optimal, so you stimulate the resistance. Organic acids can help with this.
Increased infection pressure leads to higher failure rates
High stocking densities lead to high disease pressure. This affects the health of pigs. The animal’s natural barrier, the stomach, protects the animal by killing off bacteria in the acidic environment. As soon as the stomach is not acidic enough, bacteria penetrate into the intestines, causing inflammation.
These bacteria in the bloodstream lead to weak animals, diarrhea, weak piglets and ultimately to mortality. Because the bacteria spread through the manure, the other pigs in the house also become ill. This can quickly lead to a high mortality rate or a high rejection rate at the slaughterhouse.
