Contaminated drinking water leads to a
higher mortality rate
High temperatures in the piglet barn and a low drinking water flow rate because young animals drink little, are an ideal environment for contaminated drinking water. This contamination consists of biofilm. This is a slimy layer that attracts bacteria, yeasts and moulds. Lime is also a pollutant that can cause clogged nipples.
These bacteria, yeasts and moulds in the biofilm are harmful to pigs and cause sick animals and a high mortality rate. Clogged nipples can also cause pigs to drink less. This means that the animals eat less and therefore grow less. This results in high costs.
